San Diego National Wyland Mural
Wyland, an internationally known environmental artist, began painting "Whaling Walls" to create awareness - not only for the whales, but also for the endangered oceans in which they live. Interestingly enough, he began painting his first Whaling Wall in 1981, the same year San Diego National Bank went into business.
Wyland's goal was to paint 100 Whaling Walls around the world -- San Diego National Bank was his 64th. What attracted him to the San Diego National Bank Downtown office building was that you could see the north side of our building very clearly from the I-5 Freeway and from the planes that fly in and out of San Diego International Airport.
The mural depicts five gray whales migrating down the coast of California on their way to Mexico. Wyland hoped to draw attention to the gray whales' habitat in Mexico and how important it is to their survival.
Since 1994, when the wall was painted, San Diego National Bank has enjoyed its beauty and its benefits. The whale became an icon and established a unique identity for the bank. The majestic gray whale has become an important part of the bank logo and is evident on all of the marketing and written materials San Diego National Bank uses. Replicas of the mural can be found at many of the bank's branch offices, as well as on promotional items and advertisements.
